A word on place types
While Earth Explorer uses a list of 25 categories to describe various places, the description of some places may not appear to match the category.
Take for instance the Spratly Islands. While this is categorised as a country it will be displayed as a Disputed Territory.
More commonly are places with local names for the various types of administration. In Thailand we have what is categorised as a county yet when viewing a place such as Sai Mai it will be displayed as a Changwat (จังหวัด).
A place known by a colloquial name.
One of the major land masses on the Earth.
One of the countries or dependent territories defined by the ISO 3166-1 standard.
One of the secondary administrative areas within a country.
A water feature such as a river, canal, lake, bay, ocean.
A housing development or subdivision known by name.
A historical secondary administrative area within a country.
A historical primary administrative area within a country.
A historical populated settlement that is no longer known by its original name.
A land feature such as a park, mountain, beach.
Local Administrative Area
One of the tertiary administrative areas within a country.
A uncategorized place.
One of the five major bodies of water on the Earth.
Point of Interest
A point of interest such as a school, hospital, tourist attraction.
A partial or full postal code.
An area of open water smaller than an ocean.
One of the primary administrative areas within a country.
A subdivision of a town such as a suburb or neighborhood.
An area covering multiple countries.
An area defined by the Olson standard (tz database).
A populated settlement such as a city, town, village.
An undefined place.
An area known within a specific context such as MSA or area code.
